Counting the Decades with The County

A Walsall man has celebrated his 60th birthday on the same site as where his primary school once stood and where his wedding reception took place more than 30 years ago.

Times have changed considerably since the 1950’s and David Davis has been able to see the developments and changes that have occurred over time, including the opening of the County Hotel which replaced Highcroft Primary School in 1967.

As David explains: “Before the site was converted into a hotel in 1967, it was used as Highcroft Primary School where I attended lessons from 1957 between the ages of five and 12.

“In 1968, my wife and I decided to hold our wedding reception in the hotel since we had so many fond memories. It had only been a hotel for a year so it was very strange to be in the bar drinking when I could remember sitting in the same area learning Geography!”

When thinking about where to hold his recent 60th birthday party, David knew instantly that with the memories and history he had shared with the County, he had to celebrate with an old friend:

“For my 60th birthday party, we knew that the only place we could really celebrate would be the County Hotel. The recent changes have been remarkable. Ray, the current owner, is giving the hotel its first ever refurbishment since it originally became a hotel in 1968.”

Asked how the hotel has changed David explains: “Firstly, the County has almost doubled in size since our wedding reception. The bar and restaurant area has been completely revamped as has the central heating and many of the meeting rooms and suites.

As David concludes: “Apart from the big hotel chains in Walsall, the County Hotel is the only independent hotel that can offer the same top quality facilities at a reasonable price. The County has always been in the forefront of my life and I am sure will continue to do so in the future.”
